Abstract Painting I & II

Ages 16+

Learn and expand upon a range of concepts, strategies and processes that are part of creating abstract artwork. Techniques used in mixed media and acrylic painting will be presented as well as historical information, examples of contemporary abstract artwork and color theory. Materials list is provided upon registration.

Mixed Media for Young Artists

Ages 6-11

Artists will explore a variety of art materials to create mixed media artworks. Using collage, printing and painting practices, learn new techniques in a relaxed and creative atmosphere. Work from observation and imagination and come dressed for mess. All materials are provided.

Mini Masterpieces: Art History for Tots

Ages: 3-6

Engaging early learners with the masterpieces that defined art movements throughout the ages, this course will combine art lessons with hands- on projects. Each week will offer a new theme and project that can be completed by the end of class. One parent or guardian must accompany their young artist for the duration of class. All materials are provided.

Three Styles of Acrylic Painting

Ages 18+

Incorporating art history, students will learn the techniques used in Classical, Impressionist and Expressionist art. A presentation will begin each class displaying the three art styles to serve as inspiration for painting projects created on stretched canvas with water-based acrylic paint. Comprehensive to the beginner yet challenging to the experienced artist, this class is open to students at any stage of the creative journey. Materials list is provided upon registration.

Figure Drawing

Ages 8-16

Learn and discuss various techniques used in drawing portraits. Develop skills involved in constructing accurate facial features and creating a balanced composition for a figure drawing. Sketching practices will be offered through the observation of real-life modeling and photographic references. All materials are provided.

Coffee and Creativity

Ages 18+

Start your morning with caffeine and creativity! Participants will use unconventional materials and techniques such as sewing, mosaic and wire to layer different mediums on canvas. Live demonstrations will inspire individual creative choices and unique artworks created within a communal setting. Materials list is provided upon registration.

Contemporary Art: Art as Social Conscience

Ages 18+

Join fellow art enthusiasts for engaging discussions and art presentations that address social issues such as poverty, racism, sexism and war. Gain insight into relevant topics while observing the artists who utilize their work as a platform for protest around the world. All materials are provided.

Ages 21+

Using the Amherst Writers and Artists (AWA) method, beginning and experienced writers will build skills for fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry writing. This group will focus on in-class writing, voluntary sharing and positive feedback in a supportive environment. Optional writing prompts are designed to help writers with craft and creativity. The instructor is an AWA certified affiliate. Please bring paper and a pen.

Digital Illustration

Ages 16+

This class will showcase the various skills used in the Procreate digital application. Students will observe demonstrated practices and experiment with new techniques to create images with this versatile art tool. Each week will focus on a specific theme to apply formal elements towards composition. Peers will collaborate and share insights while working towards a completed artwork. New and experienced illustrators are welcome. iPads containing the Procreate application are available for an additional rental fee. Materials list is provided upon registration.

Pose and Proportion: Live Figure Drawing Workshop

Ages 16+

Learn techniques for illustrating the human figure through various engaging sketching exercises. Study the human form in various dynamic poses, focusing on accurate proportions, anatomy and movement. Whether you’re a beginner or have previous experience, this workshop provides personalized guidance to help you improve your technique and confidence. Materials list is provided upon registration.

Abstract Landscapes in Gouache Workshop

Ages 16+

In this two-part workshop, learn how whimsical and imaginative designs can create unique landscapes. The first day will introduce the versatile medium of gouache (pronounced gwash) paint, where students will experiment with color and form to create abstract landscapes. The second day will focus on layering mediums such as colored pencils atop the gouache image. Live demonstrations will guide class participants through the creative process while experimenting with various brush strokes and values. Materials list is provided upon registration.

A 3D Model of Color: The Ott Cuboctahedron Color Theory Workshop

Ages 18+

This workshop will demonstrate how a unique tool, called the Cuboctahedron, provides a view of the color spectrum and its various components. The class instructor and creator of this model for reflected light will lead participants through creating a tactile paper form that can be used by painters and designers in building comprehension of the hues. Materials list is provided upon registration.

Bless the Mic Poetry and Performance Workshop

Ages 14+

Participants will learn the basics of poetry, lyric writing and spoken word while engaging in fun exercises during this lively workshop. Learn valuable performance techniques and writing strategies from a practicing poetess. This interactive format allows for collaborative feedback and creative ideas to perform written work with confidence and style! All materials are provided.

Experiments in Printmaking Workshop

Ages 7-14

This engaging workshop will introduce young artists to the art of printmaking. Using unconventional materials such as construction blocks and dough, participants will create a monoprint to produce prints. Join us for an afternoon of creativity and play exploring all things printmaking! Students should dress for mess. All materials are provided.

Student Learning Tours

We provide access to exceptional exhibitions and programs that explore and inspire contemporary thought. Our tours bring a diverse group of nearly 2,000 students annually to LCA for educational tours and onsite art making. Bring your students to Lubeznik Center for the Arts for an inspirational tour of our exhibits featuring internationally known and emerging artists creating unique and exciting work.

When students can't get to our galleries, we have developed a free virtual program to bring the art to your students! Educators can utilize a series of video field trips tailored to use in person or virtually.
