The public is invited to a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, September 30 at noon, in honor of the Sullair 60th Anniversary. The mural, located at the 900 block of Michigan Boulevard, is a gift from Hitachi Global Air Power, the innovative leader in compressed air solutions, to the City of Michigan City, in recognition or the long-standing partnership between the company and the community. Serving as a centerpiece of the City's Neighborhood Beautification Plan, the mural reflects a shared commitment to growth and revitalization.
The mural was designed and painted by East Chicago artist Felix Maldonado and is a tribute to Michigan City’s industrial history and the variety of peoples who helped build it; the north panel depicts the hands of the Native American population who cultivated crops and fished, the south panel portrays the labor of black workers who helped build the railroads and train cars, other panels include Harriet Colfax, the pioneering lighthouse keeper for over four decades. The mural pulls the viewer into the present and future with a pair of binoculars in the central panels that reflect a seagull, a metaphor for the beach, sand dunes and tourist industry, and a microchip, a symbol of the technology that will lead our youth forward.
Remarks will be made by Hideki Fujimoto, the president and CEO of Hitachi Global Air Power, Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch and the artist Felix Maldonado.

Hello Neighbor: Purple Windows
—
Hello Neighbor: Purple Windows is a community-based art installation that reflects themes of neighborhood, visibility and connection. The outdoor installation will be on display on LCA grounds from Oct. 1 through Nov. 15, 2025. The installationis part of Terrain Biennial 2025, "a grassroots public art festival that brings artists and neighbors together to put public art on the front lawns (and stoops, porches, windows and rooftops, too) of neighborhoods across the world," (Terrain Exhibitions, 2025).
Curated by Chicago's Purple Window Gallery, an artists' collective, and in collaboration with LCA, this installation is inspired by their Hello Neighbor initiative, created by artist and curator Lauren Iacoponi, who invited participants to transform their domestic windows to display art to the outside world during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hello Neighbor will feature salvaged windows painted in shades of purple. The installations will be placed on the grounds of LCA to resemble a walk through a neighborhood, with each window acting as a stand-in for a home.
Window installations will be created by the collective's members, (Bianca Brandolino, Naomi Elson, Samiah Fulcher, Rebecca Griffith, Millicent Kennedy, Lexi Raia and Amy Shelton) utilizing materials from the home, like blinds, curtains, yarn, Polaroids and VHS cassette tapes. These elements, often tied to everyday life, will be reimagined in playful and thought-provoking ways that link themes of community, visibility, memory and connection through art.

Using nature as their inspiration for both the architecture and the interior, their home is an elegant fusion of natural materials, colors and furnishings. The icing on the cake is their art collection, mostly from Africa where they lived for many years, and Anneke’s own magnificent artworks in many mediums.
