A CELEBRATION OF LATINO CULTURE MARCH 31 - JUNE 3 AT THE LUBEZNIK CENTER

The Lubeznik Center for the Arts is proud to present Latino Impressions: Portraits of a Culture, an exhibition celebrating the work of the Latino/a art community from March 31 – June 3 in the Lubeznik Center for the Arts’ Hyndman Gallery. The exhibit, curated by CarolAnn Brown, will feature works by local, regional and international artists, including works on loan from the private collections of: Maria Bechily and Scott Hodes; Gilberto Cardenas; Dr. Tom Carlson; Jack & Dani Lane; and Shirley Lubeznik. Artists Alfredo Arreguin, Rafael Coronel, Claudia Fernandez, Jesus Lugo, Diego Rivera and Rufino Tamayo will be represented from the private collections above. Latino Impressions is generously sponsored by McDonald’s Hispanic Owner-Operators Association and Unity Foundation of LaPorte County.

Latino Impressions focuses on the historic and current artistic trends of the Latino community. From the highly stylistic to the abstract, this exhibit will investigate a variety of themes, including personal and political identities, mythic symbols, preserving memory and rites of passage.

Exhibiting artists: Patricia Acosta, Juan Angel Chavez, Juan Compean, Ricardo Compean, Anita Garza, Michael Hernandez de Luna, Blanca Lopez, Jesus Lopez, Martina Lopez, Marcos Raya, Sydia Reyes, Edra Soto, and Maria Tomasula.

Additionally, during March 31 and April 29 Poetas y Pintores: Artists Conversing with Verse, a collaborative project sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, initiated by the Center for Women's InterCultural Leadership at Saint Mary's College and the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame, will be on exhibit in the Lubeznik Center’s NIPSCO Art Education Studios.

Co-curators Marianne Farina and Brookes Ebetsch along with ILS Director, Gilberto Cardenas, paired twelve artists with twelve poets.  Artists were challenged to create an original piece and to choose one poem to be displayed beside their work. Selections were made with the idea that contemporary Latino artists reveal an incredible dynamism through the variety of styles tastes and techniques present in their work. Through this interplay of image and the written word, a glimpse of a distinct, though certainly not definitive, representation of today’s US Latino community has emerged.

The Lubeznik Center has planned several special programs in conjunction with the Latino exhibits (fees vary):
